What to Cook When You're Almost Out of Groceries
The last day or two before a grocery run is always the most creative. Here's how to make the most of what's left.
Take stock of what you have
Before you decide dinner is impossible, check: pantry (pasta, rice, canned goods), fridge (eggs, condiments, any vegetables), freezer (proteins, frozen vegetables).
- Pantry first — often more than you remember
- Eggs can anchor almost any meal
- Frozen vegetables cook in 5 minutes
- Condiments create flavor with little else
Suggested meals
- Pasta with Olive Oil and Garlic — True pantry pasta.
- Bean Soup — Canned beans + broth = dinner.
- Scrambled Eggs on Toast — When nothing else is there.
- Fried Rice — Leftover rice + eggs + anything.
